Spielberg slated to shoot ‘Vengeance’ in June, potential actress named Variety updated their upcoming production listing this weekend to add Steven Spielberg’s next shoot that commences (tentatively, one would assume at this point) on June 1, 2005.
The project we’ve been referring to as “the untitled Mossad” project is now listed with Variety as the rumored title “Vengeance.” As we previously reported, the film (which tells the tale of the aftermath of the 1972 Olympics game massacre of Israeli athletes by the Palestinian Black September terrorist cell) will be partially based on the 1984 non-fiction work “Vengeance” by George Jonas. Variety could always be jumping the gun on the title as so many have over the last year, but given the reputation of the trade, I’m gonna give it the benefit of the doubt and assume there is finally something to it. If this changes of course, we’ll be sure to make our corrections accordingly, but until I hear different, from here on out I’ll be referring to the property as “Vengeance.”
More important than the title of the film, at this point, is the fact that Variety pegs it for a June 1 production start date. We’ve been reporting a June start date for some time now, but I’d considered it soft at this point due to the fact that Spielberg is currently plowing through the “War of the Worlds” shoot to make the proposed June 29, 2005 release date. It’s not inconceivable to that Spielberg will race from a big summer blockbuster directly into a more serious piece he’s had waiting in the wings (we certainly saw the same thing happen to amazing effect in 1992/1993). At last word, “Vengeance’s” screenplay, originally drafted by Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”) was undergoing rewrites by Tony Kushner (“Angels in America”). If Kushner’s work gets the greenlight by Spielberg, the director could be taking off for Europe (where he spent time early this year on location recces) before “War” even opens in theaters.
More exiting news still was revealed recently in the Quebec news source Le Soliel. In addition to the already mentioned (potential) “Vengeance” cast members Eric Bana (“Hulk”) and Daniel Craig (“Road to Perdition”), French-Canadian actress Marie-Josée Croze (“Taking Lives”) revealed that she had met with Spielberg personally in Paris regarding a role in the film.
Croze says she spent more time talking with Spileberg about extra-terrestrials and the war in Iraq than about her potential role in “Vengeance” (in which she would play a spy), but she said if she does get the role, that her part would take about 5 days to shoot. |

| One other casting possibility to consider again (given the fact that the film was pushed back from this winter) is Ben Kingsley, who was previous announced in association with the project. Kingsley had to back out of plans for the original winter 2004 shoot due to a commitment he had to appear in Roman Polanksi’s “Oliver Twist” remake, but given “Vengeance’s” delay, perhaps Kingsley’s schedule will be rearranged to allow him to re-team with his “Schindler’s List” and “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” director (and perhaps not, as this is just wishful thinking on my behalf and I havenothing beyond hope to corroborate). |

Finally, there is always the possibility that the June 1 production commencement date that Variety reports could be less-than-solid for a number of reasons. First, if “War” keeps Spielberg longer than anticipated (given the speed in which it launched into production), second, if the “Vengeance” screenplay doesn’t see approval after Kushner’s work, and third (and most unnerving) is if George Lucas pulls another “Rain Man” on Spielberg and insists that “Indiana Jones 4” moves forward with shooting next summer. Whether or not Spielberg would back out of “Vengeance” (this if Variety is totally on the money with their information) to do the fourth Indy film will be one of the major decisions of Spielberg’s career, if it comes to that. I can tell you there will be many thrilled and disappointed fans on either side of the fence no matter what decision he makes. |

Variety has 'Vengeance' on its production roster for the New Year as well, with a June 2005 shooting start date penciled in. This could potentially mean the film (about an Israeli Mossad agent and his commission to hunt down and deliver “vengeance” to terrorists who murdered Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics) could see a quick turnaround to release since it’s been rumored that Spielberg will hit the ground running and shoot the film quick and dirty. I’d be surprised if the film makes a winter release (awards season, which this film has the potential of owning), but you never know what Spielberg has up his sleeve. If a massive effects-driven project like “War of the Worlds” can hit theaters in almost eight months from shooting to release, than a character-driven work like “Vengeance” could conceivably be shot and released in six months time. If you though Spielberg was a movie-making machine in 1982, 1993, 1997 and 2002, just hang on to your seats in 2005! |

| He has played the Incredible Hulk and Prince Hector of Troy, but yesterday Eric Bana was in a more down-to-earth role. The actor and long-time biker joined the Motorcycle Riders Association Toy Run and, with Cathy Freeman, led the ride. Thousands of riders filling three city blocks began the Toy Run, in its 27th year, from the city to Williamstown where they were joined by others for a presentation of toys for needy children at Christmas. Bikers donated enough toys to fill a furniture truck. Bana gave an Elmo doll to the Salvation Army's John Dalziel as a token of all the gifts. One set of gifts was from Bill and Julie Campbell, of Cranbourne, who delivered toys donated by Dandenong Hospital staff. |

Star of "Black Hawk Down", "The Hulk" and "Troy", Eric Bana also returns to Classic Adelaide to drive in the competition section of Classic Adelaide.
Eric last drove in the 2002 Classic and will again bring his V8 Falcon Hardtop he first purchased when he was 14 years old. Bana has been a keen motor sports competitor in the Porsche 944 Challenge Cup series this year to further hone his skills as a race driver.
ERIC BANA CHANGES CARS FOR CLASSIC ADELAIDE Motoring enthusiast and actor Eric Bana, with film titles such as "Black Hawk Down", "Troy" and "Chopper" to his credit, has had a change of plans in terms of the car he is to drive in this year's Classic Adelaide.
Originally Bana was to have competed in a V8 Falcon Hardtop
he drove in the event in 2002 and has owned since he was 14. That plan came to nought when the engine cried enough and a con rod let go while testing the car at Calder Raceway in Victoria.
Bana will now compete in the Classic Adelaide in a Porsche 944, a car that he used with some good effect as a circuit racecar competing in the Victorian State Series. |

DAY FOUR -CLASSIC ADELAIDE REPORT BROADBENT MAKES IT THREE IN A ROW
Rex Broadbent and co-driver Michael Goedheer in a 1974 Porsche 911 RS #577 have taken victory in the 2004 Classic Adelaide. 'Three times is beyond my wildest dreams' said the elated Broadbent after the Hutt Street finish and traditional champagne spray. 'The competition was awesome and it has been a tough year.'
Incidents today included the following: Car #620 Eric Bana/Tony Rammuno (980 Porsche 944) hit a wall on the first stage today (SS 26 Montacute) and retired. |

HE may be all smiles, but Eric Bana is still hurting. An avid St Kilda fan, he is "gutted" by his team's preliminary final loss to Port Adelaide. |

"I'm still cut up about it," he says frankly. In fact, the Troy, Chopper
and The Hulk star rated it as even worse than the Grand Final loss to the Crows in 1997. "The Grand Final slowly evolved all the way through the final quarter so you could prepare for it a bit, but this year, when the siren went, it was like someone had hit me over the head with a baseball bat." He did not travel to AAMI Stadium for the game, which was probably a good thing.
"I'm a pretty ugly supporter. I was warned I should stay home and I'm glad I did," he explains. "Only your wife should ever see you cry."
In Adelaide to compete in the Classic Adelaide Rally, he is a world away from the hullabaloo of Hollywood and happy to be spending time in Australia. |

Bana is on a year-long break and having a holiday back home in Melbourne between films, after production of Steven Spielberg's Vengeance was pushed back to next year.
We hear Jennifer Aniston told hubby Brad Pitt his Achilles costume was a keeper, so what did Bana's wife Rebecca think of his Hector outfit?
"She loved it," he says with a wicked grin. It seems he has laid off the training a bit since finishing Troy, though. "I've got a happy medium at the moment. You can't turn into Humpty Dumpty between films, it's too hard to get back," he chuckles. |

Eric Bana's latest career gamble could yet prove to be his safest bet yet. The actor has landed the lead role in Lucky You, a drama set in the world of high stakes professional poker Lucky You will be directed by Curtis Hanson, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Forrest Gump's scribe Eric Roth, according to the international film trade press.
The Warner Bros Pictures production is expected to begin shooting early next year in Las Vegas.
Bana's casting in Lucky You follows persistent speculation that he had been chosen as Pierce Brosnan's replacement for the role of 007 in the Bond franchise. Bana has repeatedly denied the rumours, which stem from a report in last month's News of the World. |

Eric to star in 8 Mile follow-up. He won't be sporting a beanie and rapping his was back to the screen (at least we really hope not) but Australian heart-throb Eric Bana has signed to star in Curtis Hanson's 8 Mile follow-up, Lucky You (which has absolutely nothing to do with the eminem-starring drama).
Having scared the living daylights out of viewers in Hulk and torn up the box office like a thunderball in 'Troy', Bana will scale back his action antics for Hanson's film, a Vegas-set saga set in the world of high stakes poker.
Hitting casinos with a view to a killing at the tables, Bana plays Huck Cheever, a man whose philosophy to live and let die has served him well at the game. The screenplay is the work of Academy Award-winning Forrest Gump scribe Eric Roth, a man who knows that while diamonds are forever, the sheen of an Oscar win will fade without some decent follow-ups.
The world is not enough for Bana though, it seems, and Lucky You isn't the only project on his slate - well, you only live twice don't you?
The Aussie star is also set to star in Spielberg's Vengeance, the story of the terrorist attack on the 1972 Olympic Games. Spielberg's packed schedule has pushed filming of Vengeance back somewhat however, giving Bana license to kill some time by starring in another project. Any suggestions? |
