Summary
"As a kid, I loved fantasising about driving cars across the skies. I still have my first car, a very old Ford Falcon, which looks straight out of Mad Max. I wasn't crazy about school and studies at all; I wanted to become a car mechanic. I ended up working in a bar and since I used to horse around, I was told I could become a stand-up comic like Richard Pryor. So I did." (Interview By: Khalid Mohamed, Source: Mid-Day.com)
A self-proclamined "revhead" (also known as "petrol-head" in Australia, "motor-head" in the United States), Eric is completely interested in cars and motorcycles; he's been a "lover of all things automotive since a child" and he's been racing cars for a long time. His first car was an old XB Coupe, purchaced for $1000 when he was 15. He's no stranger to the track, either - he made his motorsport debut in 1996's Targa Tasmania, driving that same 1974 Ford Falcon XB Coupe. Other competitions include the 2002 and 2003 Classic Adelaide. "I've enjoyed many exciting hours on my 900cc Ducati motorcycle around the Sandown and Phillip Island tracks. Sydney racer Ron Goodman has kindly let me drive his NASCAR around the Calder Park Thunderdome." How many cars does he exactly have? Less than eight. (Written By: Stephanie, Source: EBCetnral.com)
He describes his young self as an "infatuated rev-head", obsessed with cars and motorbikes. It's an obsession that lasts to this day. Having driven in big races like the Targa Tasmania and the Adelaide Classic, in 2003 Bana would become the official patron of the Dick Johnson Racing Company - the former star driver Johnson being one of Eric's earliest heroes. And remember, this was nothing like the glamorous, money-drenched world of Formula One or Indie Car - this was about the V8 Supercar Championship, rough and hard, more Mad Max than Monza. Bana was staying true to his working-class roots. (Written By Dominic Wills, Source: Tiscali Films & TV.com)

"The worst coupe in Australia, but what did I know at the time?" It's a story most of us can relate to, right? Aside from being a six cylinder, the coupe body was full of rust and hits. "Just about everything has been replaced now, doors, guards, you name it. But I'll be chasing my tail with rust while ever I own this shell," says Eric. (Source: 'Street Machine' June 1996)

North Shore Welcomes Hulk

The Incredible Hulk, actor Eric Bana, has underlined the Mosman residential market's renewed strength, splashing out $4 million on a Balmoral house. The Melbourne-based actor, fresh from filming the coveted role, has snared an Alex Popov-designed residence in pre-auction negotiations. The buy follows the stand-up comedian's meteoric five-movie career which kicked off with the 1997 film 'The Castle'.

The house will be Bana's Sydney base when he is filming at Fox Studios, allowing his wife, Rebecca, and their two children, to be close to their extended family. High Court Chief Justice Murray Gleeson is the Sydney based father-in-law of the actor.
More than 220 houses have sold at auction in Mosman over the past year at an average price of $1.66 million. The 16 Mosman houses sold at auction in 2003 have realised an average of $1.83 million. Mosman's 64 per cent clearance rate during 2003 is slightly above the 63 per cent average for the whole of Sydney.
The inner west remains Sydney's strongest residential market, with agents selling 71 per cent of their house stock this year, averaging $760,000. The lower North Shore, with a 60 per cent clearance rate, has been among the weak spots, according to the Home Price Guide. House prices have averaged $880,000 at auction across Sydney this year, ranging from $190,000 at Bradbury to $6.1 million at Balmoral.
The big Balmoral sale of a neat two-bedroom cottage on 1200 square metres reflected 9 per cent price growth since its $5.6 million sale, first in December 2000, and then again at the same price in February 2002. After the requisite costs, $300,000 for stamp duty and an estimated $100,000 in estate agent's fees, plus marketing and legal fees, its latest mortgage-free vendor, entrepreneur Richard Penn, would have only just broken even. But Penn was fortunate in that in mid-2002 he exchanged contracts at $6.4 million, with the mystery buyer abandoning the deposit. Better capital growth was achieved on the three-bedroom $190,000 Bradbury house, which previously sold for sold for $114,500 in February 2001. After expenses, including $2500 stamp duty and $4000 agent fees, its Campbelltown district vendor would have pocketed about $65,000, representing more than 50 per cent gain in two years.
